GA4 Versus Universal Analytics

GA4 is the future of website analytics

GA4 differs from Universal Analytics (UA) in many ways

UA

  • UA highlights Total Users (shown as Users) in most reports
  • UA uses session-based data
  • UA tracks screenviews in separate mobile-specific properties

VS

GA4

  • GA4 focuses on Active Users (also shown as Users). It incorporates User ID natively across all reporting, analysis and insights and does not require a separate User-ID reporting view
  • GA4 uses event-based data
  • GA4 collects both website and app data to better understand the customer journey
  • GA4 includes privacy controls such as cookieless measurement, and behavioral and conversion modeling

Why You Have to Migrate to GA4

On July 1, 2023, standard Universal Analytics properties will no longer process data.

You'll be able to see your Universal Analytics reports for a period of time after July 1, 2023. However, new data will only flow into Google Analytics 4 properties.

FAQs

As of July 1, 2023, Universal Analytics will stop recording new data and GA4 will be the only version of Google Analytics that will record new data moving forward.

But that doesn't mean you should wait to update until July 1, 2023.

The earlier you set up GA4, the more year over year data you will have available next year when you're reviewing your data.
Universal Analytics and GA4 are both versions of Google Analytics, a web analytics service that tracks and reports website traffic. Universal Analytics is the older version of the service and uses a client-side tracking method, while GA4 is the newer version and uses a server-side tracking method. This means that GA4 can collect data from a wider range of sources and devices, including non-web sources such as mobile apps and IoT devices.

One of the main differences between the two versions is the focus on event-based tracking. In Universal Analytics, events are tracked as separate data points and can be used to supplement pageview data. In GA4, events are the primary focus, and the service is designed to track and analyze user interactions and behaviors as a series of events. This allows GA4 to provide more detailed and granular insights into user behavior. GA4 also includes a number of new features and capabilities, such as automatic event tracking and the ability to create and analyze user segments based on user actions and behaviors.
No, the existing Universal Analytics setup won’t be impacted if the setup is done correctly. In fact, Google recommends that you continue to send data to Universal Analytics alongside GA4.
Since every case is unique, the setup price will depend on the complexity of your website: e.g. the platform your website is built on, the events you want / need to track etc.
